Fine guitar and vocals on a diverse, jazzy set of songs February 20, 2013
I can't say I've been too keen on Robben Ford in the past, he's obviously a very capable guitarist but for me he's always lacked that extra something to take him to the next level. However, I do quite like this album, I think it has a good overall feel and most of the tracks seem to hang together, with Robben's guitar and vocals taking centre stage but with the keyboards of Larry Goldings and trombonist (!) Steve Baxter also adding to the mix, together with the rhythm section of Harvey Mason and David Piltch. It's certainly a diverse selection of songs, from Charley Patton's "Bird's Nest Bound" to Bob Dylan's "Most Likely You Go Your Way" to Allen Toussaint's "Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky" but Robben and the band manage to meld them all to their jazzy style. Although he apparently used only one guitar on the session, the 1963 Epiphone Riviera shown on the cover which he kept on the 'rhythm' pickup, his guitar playing certainly sounds good throughout and he can dig in for solos when required. I wasn't too keen on the instrumental "On That Morning" which I thought was overlong and I thought that the old Charles Brown song "Fool's Paradise" was a bit too slick but the rest of the songs I thought were nice and varied, with my favourites being "Oh Virginia" and "Fairchild"
